Discussion points for those who want them;

How do you feel about the film/tv series/etcetera? When did you see it?

Are you aware of changes in the adaptation? What are you expecting from the book?

Do you watch a lot of adaptations? Do you normally try and read the book first?

There are huge numbers of films and television series produced every year based on or inspired by beloved - or in some cases not so beloved - books. Sometimes they are very strict adaptations, and sometimes they are more fluid, and sometimes they bear almost no resemblance to the original text. It can be quite insightful to experience a story from a different perspective.

1. I watched the Romola Garai Emma a few months ago right after I’d watched The Hour and my Romola Garai problem was real, real bad, and it was pretty and charming and I ran through it in a few days. Badly done, Emma! Badly done.

2. Yo, I have no idea what they changed. Just from peeking at the first few pages, I can guess that they handle the big ol’ “Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich” infodump much, much differently, not that I object. (I’m expecting Emma to be a charming brat. I’m going to be picturing Mr. Knightley as Jonny Lee “Grumpy Cat” Miller.)

3. …nope! I mean, I suppose stuff like Justified or Hannibal technically count, but I don’t watch a lot of adaptations-as-adaptations for the sake of watching the thing I read on the screen. I only watched Emma because of my embarrassing personal problem and because it was a miniseries instead of a movie, and would take up more of my time than a movie would while being less… of a commitment, if that makes any sense? It’s easier for me to sit down for four hour-long installments than it is for me to sit down for one hour-and-forty-minute movie.

Oh dear I’m getting all this out of the way in one fell swoop, cut for minor spoilers:

I did like Excession. I’m a little bored with the “inexplicable representation of an Elder/multidimensional race beyond our ken shows up, passively puts us lesser beings in danger, and disappears without a trace once it’s taken our measure or w/e” trope, but only because this is the third time I’ve come across it in the last few months or so. (The other two were in DS9 and in The Better Part of Valor.)And it did some of the things I remember annoyed me about Consider Phlebas: the fragmentariness, the weird pacing, &c &c, things which were blessedly absent in Use of Weapons and The Player of Games. That’s just a matter of personal preference, and at least Banks got his shit together by the time Excession rolled around. In its better moments it was Pratchetty.

But… interspecies politics, the goddamn ridiculous Affront, the ethics of running an empire (the Culture is totes an empire) on soft power and espionage and the knowledge that you have the biggest guns around, even if they’ve been decommissioned, AI drama.

Yuicorn I have no idea what the heck would interest you… I have some dull dead-end SSBB attempts. I have a little bit of origfic here and there but most of it is shared with Rachel. The Heiress let the Empress grab her chin, and did not so much as bare her teeth. Up close, they had the same face. A dozen heiresses had stood where in her place and had their throats torn out — if she followed them, it would be no great loss to the universe. Fish and frogs would move into her river hive; frost would crack the roof and let the sparrows roost in the rafters.

“Little sister, what do you pity?” the Empress asked.

“The fish of the river,” the Heiress said, for she’d watched them break themselves against the streams and struggle against her spear, “and the summer rains.”

“Little sister, what do you hate?” the Empress asked.

“Nothing, elder sister,” said the Heiress, and the Empress let her go.

Hmm, I don’t think I showed you the full draft of that SPNstuck Sollux-and-Feferi thing. It was unpresentable then and it’s unpresentable now, but here’s a bit I don’t mind:

“See,” she said, “your universe really likes twos. What you call ‘angels’ and ‘demons’ are just beings that operate in four dimensions more than normal entities.”

“Four dimensions, two squared; eight dimensions, two cubed.”

“Good!” She clapped her hands together and grinned at him. Her mouth stretched wider than a human’s could.

“What does that have to do with anything?” he said. Headache number eleven was creeping up on him. Probably, Feferi had modified the brain without any care as to what the human body could take.

There was a thunderstorm brewing outside the deep-set window. Feferi flat-out forgot about him, sometimes—she got up to look out at it, and the window itself disappeared as she leaned forward. The wind made the disapproving portraits on the walls over the bookshelves sway back and forth. She’d gotten him a bright yellow sweater to go with the skirt he’d taken from Rose. It kept the worst of the chill out. He went back to work, careful of his brain this time, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. For all her effort at looking normal, Feferi was more real than anything in the room, like the only colored part of a black-and-white drawing.

“I couldn’t confine myself to four dimensions, let alone him,” she said. “We’d burst at the seams. Eight is really”—Sollux was pretty sure she was saying reel-y—“really hard, but doable, and you have to jettison some ballast and drop an anchor in an actual universe. I found the anchor, but not the ship.”
